You being by calling the NPC and defensive fixes "nerfs." This is not a matter of semantics. "Nerf" means to intentionally downgrade an application to make it's use more difficult or challenging; while is may be a result of these changes, these changes were a fix. A fix, in this context is a change made to stop abuse and/or sxploitation of an application. Preventing the NPC exploit and making defenses actually work may make your gaming harder, but they are not "nerfs."
Food consumption is a different matter. There is probably a tiny bit of wiggle which could be adjusted for when comapring units. I advise, however, not to expect any changes here as this "wiggle room" is not sufficient enough to warrant any kind of attention at this time. After Age 2 begins, there may be room for addressing this tiny issue.
