If you want to match up the resources spent on that army/time to make it to what the NPCs would theoretically have to spend to make theirs, its not even close- yet there are substantial losses.

If this is a game based more on team play than anything, as you say, why can't you combine forces in an attack? Waves upon waves won't matter now anyways, because level 9 walls with 50k archers defending on them can take out an army 3x their size (which you will never get in one wave, anyways).

You can call it a "fix" in your mind, but thats because you believe your opinion to be how the game is supposed to be. Its a subjective term at best
It comes down to perspective again. You want to see things from only one side. This inherently limits your understanding.

Now, how do you break down defenses? The answer was demonstrated in your "how not to attack defenses" example.

Throwing ballistae at a defensive position will not be nearly as effective as it once was. Now, there is a new feature which I called "combined arms." This means you will need to protect your ballistae from defensive forces by placing other units in combat with them.

Strategy and tactics matter.

If you do not understand how to make waves of attacks from different locations, then there is little I can do to help you here. It's not as complicated as you may think. In fact, I figured it out probably the first day I started playing. I'll give you a hint though: there's a marching time estimate in the game.
