Those were my original thoughts, but Bole's making it sound like the original skills would only have marginal effect. Like, play and later development will be more important, is the impression I'm getting.
Eh, just let the skills all be write-ins. Gives even more freedom of choosing.
Also, maybe it could be like something I saw somewhere else, where the more general you define a skill, the less you know in each specific part of it, while a more specifically-defined skill you're better at your specialization.
(Say, someone with swords 3 would get handily beaten by someone with long swords 3, if they're both wielding long swords. But the one with long swords couldn't use other kinds of swords so effectively.)
