Now that you mention it, that would have been a good idea...

Nah, I actually took it from my character's background. First, from coming from a somewhat wealthy family, it is only natural that their child would experience multiple things. After coming to [Insert town name here], the only way he found to survive was to perform odd jobs around town. Things like cooking and cleaning, possibly gathering firewood or watching children. While he might not be exceedingly good at any of them, he's competent enough in general life skills to be reliable. He can't cook like a master chef, but he can cook well enough that you won't complain about the aftertaste.

Relooking at it, It might be a little too overpowered, but only at later levels, where it would encompass more things than just general life skills. Comparatively, if someone had Sword skill 20, and I had General skill 20, I would rank around 5-10 in sword skill as long as I've had to use a sword. I can't just be proficient in everything, but I would say it could possibly allow him to pick up on things more easily than other people, thus allowing a larger skill set later on.

(On a side note, although my character does come from a rich background, he never did have any actual fighting experience.)

Of course, I can always change that skill if the rest of the group sees fit, to something else more specific.
