Great story, if I can make one suggestion however, when trying to set a story in such a specific time it can be easy to get lost in the history. When there is so much true history surrounding the events it is hard not to get caught between the events, the true players, and the style you are trying to achieve. I personally am a huge fan of the Romantic movement, and might suggest that you try writing in a less constrained environment, instead of a specific region, somewhere in France at around this time, or, with intent, in a specific time and place with events made up to suite the story, or perhaps even in a fictional world, it might give you the room you need to develop the human story without crashing into historical events. Just my thoughts, but over all really good story.
