Guy Fawkes was a dude that tried to blow up the House of Parliament. He was of course caught & eventually executed.

As for celebrating Guy Fawkes like the Aussie's party on Australia Day it's more of standing in the freezing cold, trying to light a load of fireworks without blowing yourself up. Not quite in the same league.
Don't forget about the drinking and the big fires, and some other minor details. Though any more of this and we will forget that the thread is to celebrate being Australian! Even though I am British.
