When there's been mass organizing of protests to disrupt the current society, it is the duty of the police and, if necessary, the army to break it up.
It is true that police/military are there to protect society from disruption, but what seems to be going on is that they are bieng ordered to protect the status quo of the corrupt government. The "society" are the protesters and they are making their voices heard.
