Wow. There I was standing in Liberation Square, in front of the KFC. After the speech last night, where the president announced he would NOT be stepping down, the people were angry, and defeated. The atmosphere was tense. Suddenly, the crowd became absolutely silent. The Vice President of Egypt comes onto the big projector...although I didn't completely understand everything he said, the message was clear. Mubarak was stepping down. People started shouting. People started crying, singing, waving flags, shouting "You are Egyptian, hold your head up hi", cries of "God is great". No one could believe it. The atmosphere was euphoric. We walked through the square towards the bridge. It was almost impossible to move. More and more and more people poured in. People were standing on top of bus stops, on the tanks with the soldiers, chanting and singing, waving flags, patting each other on the back, shouting "CONGRATULATIONS!!". Women, men, children, foreigners-a sea of people stood there celebrating. When we left, it was almost impossible to make your way through the crowds. Men were grabbing my hand and helping me get through. One held my hand as we looked up at a man standing on top of a statue waving a flag for a few moments. The night was surreal. On the way home traffic for miles was completely stopped from the pedestrian traffic, with people hanging out of their car windows, shouting and waving flags. Even now, from my 5th floor apartment I can hear the cars honking in rhythm, and people singing and shouting and chanting.
Wow. What an amazing thing to live through. It might be true the future is unsure, but tonight was an amazing night, and I feel extremely blessed, supremely lucky, to have been able to witness it. Now comes the hard part...
