Thread: Age II vs Age I

Age 2 beta was like the 3rd biggest video game disappointment of all time for me. I was actually emotionally hurt that Evony thought we were all 5 year old girls with Hello Kitty barrettes holding up our pigtails and a desire to mindlessly push buttons with no sense of risk or reward.

It's not so bad anymore. They fixed the really really outrageously horrible mistakes and the stuff that I used to think was stupid and pointless and just full of crap isn't all that bad. I mean, the game was made to keep the crappy players around longer and paying money. Which it is far more successful at than Age I, they just forgot to make Age II fun at first.

I must agree. The beta was just horrible. But hey, it was BETA, so they improved it all. I started on na20, and I hoped and prayed for the attack button and there it was. I was among the superpower there, then the server died. So Colonization+ Attack = bad news. So bad news= Superserver?

I know one of the reason i walked away was all that blue, Gave me a headache, and the graffics i felt like i was stuck in an 80s arcade.

I actually disagree. I played Age1 for a year and had an upkeep of over 15mil/hr in my main war city, 5mil/hr in several others. I farmed CONSTANTLY. I logged on 3x/day to send off my farming waves to 5's and 10s and sent out over 100 farming waves per day. I really didn't enjoy that.

Beta was a lot of fun...1k cents per day and double speed on everything...and the Hero Equipment was a much better way of doing things conceptually because the failures occurred in developing the gems to attach to your equipment, not affecting your attack scores like they do now (the star system is a terrible system, terribly unfair in the way it works, and a HUGE time/money sink despite that I really like how the equipment determines the bulk of hero value).

In Beta, the real battles took place against the other players' HCs, and we had some great battles! I remember that many of us had no clue about HH's or much of anything else, and it was lots of fun looking around and figuring out how everything worked.

Also, Age2 is superior to Age1 in that the use of stratagems adds a little more depth to the gameplay, and the fact that you typically win a ton of them from the wheel means that sometimes you get into strat wars back and forth as well that can turn the tide of the battle....recalling half an opponents waves, speeding some up and slowing others down, reducing the loyalty of their heroes----it's cool!

And come on, who doesn't like clicking on an invader's city and either taxing them to reduce their gold, taking a portion of their food, claiming 5% of their most powerful troop division as your own or dismissing 10% of that same group altogether? It's a wonderful defensive maneuver, and a great way to handle inactive players when you can just draft them down to an easily managed level.

The Historic Cities also add a level of challenge to the NPC portion of the game that require precise timing, teamwork and knowledge of how to strip particular troops from the defensive layering and in which order. Taking these cities can be a LOT of fun and a great reward for your hard work.

Is Age2 perfect? By no means; however it's every bit as fun and playable as Age1. I was Erik The Red on s78, now ss25 and had nearly 2mil prestige, 9 cities (terrible luck with medals on that server), and troops galore as I mentioned. I was a member of CobraSW, TheOne, Tmbstone and finally TheBrood, the reigning alliance on that server. I've played Age1 and understand it...and love Age2. Yes, money is more of a factor; but yes, it's a LOT of fun!

Aaaaaaaaaaanyway, off my soapbox. What are you doing reading this? Go kill something!

Age 2 is too heavily designed for coiners.
hero gear, gems and HHs are just some of the one sided aspects to this game. Most players are stuck at lv.2 gear. What chance have they?
Hero cap kills players who are not heavy coiners. They have no chance. Leadership is key in the battles, even farming 10s is extremely hard with poor gear and normal heroes.
HCs are fun to cap, terribly boring to rebuild.
Drafting is ok, but was still buggy and nerfed when I played. It killed it for me.
Strats are also extremely annoying, a coiner can quiet literally defeat you anytime he wants. credit card rules. While a few strats are worthwhile if both players have access to them, in most cases it works against a smaller player.

Battles are bigger in my opinion, which can be good. I fought with over 1 million troops in some uprisings. However the colonising feature is easy to exploit and therefore makes having colonies usless. Drafting as a suzerain is still seriously bugged.

No refuge is a joke. It allows insane armies to be maintained.

and lets not even get into Facebook. That alone killed evony for me.

Note: I played NA4 so the attack feature was not added. But the other factors still kills age2.

The graphics only caused lag. I never noticed the graphics in age1 much anyway, too busy attacking.

While Age2 COULD have been great, it failed 100%.

Any non-Facebook / non-coining player is definitely stuck with level 2 gear. Despite saying that Lost Armor Scripts are "easy" to obtain, they sure never did drop for me on NA1.

Yep, that's why those of us on Age I with relatively decent heroes were opposed to the restrictions. They said "you won't have to start all over", which was, as time has shown, untrue. I'd have gotten at most level 3 gear and then been stuck.

...and meanwhile, on Age I that has refuge, Evony whisks away NPCs on a whim.

Refuge was a brutal thing that kept me online too often farming. I don't miss it a bit.

The attack button has made Age2 a lot of fun

The point of a fair wargame is that if you go away your army leaves you (which makes sense.)
The upkeep is half Age1, and facebook allows you half upkeep too. Add Vesta and its free. Holiday mode can be used if going on holiday.
I left Age2 over a month ago and still have about 20 million troops waiting in my cities when I checked in out of curiousity.
