Can't the teacher just recognize you and put a checkmark in an attendance book?

A little checkmark is all we needed in grade school, I can't imagine attendance has gotten so complex. I never took attendance in HS or college. If you weren't there, then you didn't learn or get the homework. Missing too much class inevitably leads to failures on the tests.
Some people just don't want to be in school at all though. Parents need to be notified if someone is missing from class because the school is responsible for them during those hours. (That's if the person actually came in in the first place.) Our parents also receive a text if we don't come in at all but most of the time if the person hasn't come in it's because they're sick.

Nope, just a public, non fee-paying school. I would say average, but we get nearly the best exam results in the country. (That's including private schools.)
