There were two players in my server I remember in particular, named Bunghole and Buttworms. The latter I didn't get to know, but he was a strong player of my server respected by many. The former was a funny guy, smart player, and dedicated alliance member.

Strange names, but they were valuable players to the server, IMO.

Of course, sometimes there are really immature/provocative sorts across the game, though some just pick an odd name for the "lulz" and end up being pretty decent people.
    It's all Rodri's fault.

    Down with the prudes!

The only names I ever have a problem with are the ones that are blatantly racist or so strongly perverse they encourage pedos or bestiality.
It may not reflect the caliber of the PLAYER but it casts doubt on the quality of the PERSON. Just like in real life I tend to avoid guys named Guido or "insert common gang name here" I don't want "Bunghole" affecting my psyche either. Ya'll need to do some study on the water and words experiments that have been done. They are eye opening.

I've had several discussions with people concerned with the lack of respect on the net. Some are even considering teaching "Digital Citizenship" courses to teens etc.

I wouldn't recommend a game like Evony with it's lack of community standards, block not working etc. to anyone - even healthy adults. Just today in WC they started telling "MOM" jokes. Fortunately they were so bad they weren't even offensive but is that what I want to expose "anyone" too?

The offensive names, hero names, city names etc. all point to the lack of understanding about what society in general considers good taste.

If you are in a public place, which Evony is, a person usually limits their behavior to what would be most tolerated - or asked to leave.

Or, as in the case of this game, although I've had lots of fun in the past, I have realized that is is not a socially healthy environment. So I pop on once a day - change chat to alliance and do my thing. I depend on Skype to chat with other players.

Looking at the first post I didn't see the fine distinction on player caliber and names being the only permissible discussion topic but then I have a cold, which is why I'm spending time browsing the forum instead of doing something constructive ^^.

And as a devoted web "Shiny Object" Diva I stand by my earlier posted thoughts.

People that "think" they can separate their gaming life from their "real life" don't have a good grasp on how the mind/soul works. But that's all I'm gonna say as this is a game forum not a psychology forum.

If you seriously get offended by another player's ID/alliance name in a browser-based MMORTS, they have already won.

Yes, I can see the point the original poster was making, but also see the view of others. Personally names do not bother me. A good player normally comes with a repuation and is often well known. Looking at heros and stuff isnt an accurate indicator. Many good heroes have been passed to average players when the glitches allowed. Titles can be bought. Just my opinion.

So far I have I'm a pretty pink pony and I shouldn't use this language on the forums

More to come once I get the titles.

I wonder why guys always scout my cities...
Yeah that's pretty nasty and I would seriously think twice - heck, no I wouldn't join your alliance if this was encouraged if you promised me cookies with frosting.

I was really blessed to be in a good alliance when Civony started (well the third one actually) where we were real family and people were normal folk. Not surprising 99% of those people moved on and the ones that use the potty mouth, foul names, mom jokes etc are the ones left - for the most part. There are still some players of integrity thankfully but many of those are hanging on by a thread.

I just came from a breakfast meeting of web and education experts and gosh not one person there said anything non-appropriate - oh wait, that was real life O_o. But wait - they wouldn't say anything inappropriate on the web either. Wow - what a concept!
