Default Coalitions.. why? or why not?

I was just curious on the average forum-goers thoughts and opinions on the use of coalitions. If you're not sure why I mean by "coalition", a general description is a group of alliances that act as one alliance for a unified purpose. One general purpose is to clear a state of all red flags. My experience with coalitions, based on 3 different servers, is they only work for short periods of time. The longer they last, the more susceptible to curruption they become. Or, if they are too succesfull, they take can absolutey kill a server.

So, what are your ideas forum-goers? Please try to stay away from any personal mud-slinging, name calling, and flamming in genereal. (I know that wont happen, but one can hope right?)

depends what the relationship is between the alliances in the coalition, and the amount of alliances in them. I was part of an alliance and we had one sister who was ranked maybe in the only top 20 while we were the dominant alliance. We shared 2 states, and it worked out great, we were together for as long as the two alliances were in existence virtually(many months).

Prior to that i was part of a coalition where multiple top 10 alliances were forced to join mine via the common join or die recruitment. they changed their names and became part of the family. This did not last too long, and even when it was in existence, the smaller alliances in the coalition would send only a handful of cities on invasions where we would send one from almost every member.

edit: NO ONE is allowed in my farms though, blue or green
double edit: im with bertanderine, 1 sister is ok with me but otherwise no blues for me please

The idea of "join or die" has been discussed before, but I think it can directly relate to how successful a coalition, or even a single alliance, can be. If you are forced to join a group to survive, more often than not, you are never truley going to be loyal to that group. Get enough of those unhappy people togethere and eventually they will break off and fight back.

But the same outcome often comes from friendly alliances that come together willingly, especially when 4/5 Top5 alliances come together. At some point the server becomes stale and then you have groups turning on each other because there is no where else to go. I've been there. And while is does provide some much-needed action, it always ends up with personal vendettas where someone get there feelings hurt when someone from another alliance they used to be friends with is attacking them. And long after the coalition is broken up and the original alliances have gone their seperate ways, those personal vendettas come back to start wars over and over again.

I was diplomatic officer for the no1 alliance in S1 when we were attacked by a multi-alliance family [karnage]. Almost everyone in my alliance threw in the towel because of gaming tweaks that were enforced at around that time, but I remember in the first days of the war every single sub of this alleged "1000+ member alliance" that I spoke to said they wouldn't attack us unless we hit them first, and that they didn't support their mother alliance's war against us. This was borne out by attack report data too. So a weak coalition will unravel in war against a decent opponent and a diplomatic officer who knows where to push buttons and press flesh.

Alliance families built on "join or die" are inherently unstable because the subs will resent their subjugation and enforced name change, stupid peace demands, etc.

I can't speak for Age I, but in Age II coalitions are usually the weaker but higher prestige alliances teaming up and blueing each other. As time goes on, the better alliances pass them in prestige and crush them in the battlefield.

Coalitions are usually a sign of weakness.

Coalitions have their purpose. But there is also a time to disband. Our server is being ruined as there is only one coalition left and they are ruining the game for everyone, including themselves, they just dont' get it yet.

    Sad state of affairs.

Coalitions born from a bit of respect and the realisation that inspite of whatever, your defence is your alliance's responsibility THEN the coalition's do work.

Its when a part of the coalition starts dragging down the others that they *** up. The usual join or die types or the ones made to fight common enemies with nothing else in common. I've seen a whole sub created by a top alliance by the usual join or die tactics being left to the wolves when the main one disbanded to merge with someone else. They looked at their No 2 as pathetic and didn't give a crap abt them apart from moving them out of their NPC fields. Yet forced them to join to concentrate their fights against others. In the end, such messed up families give out truckloads of info and intelligence and provide flats etc out of spite

Best coalitions - members moving in and out of all allies freely and happy to play with any of the teams in there. Maybe one full strength alliance and upto 2 smaller compact war groups.
