Default Christchurch NZ Hit By 6.3 Magnitude Earthquake

At around 12.50 pm (local time) the city of Christchurch was rocked by a major earthquake that has caused severe damage and it is feared there may be many deaths. (unconfirmed)

Christchurch was still recovering from a 7.1 magnitude quake in September last year and perhaps due to the closer proximity of the epicentre, this quake has caused more damage to buildings and infrastructure. Smaller after-shocks are being felt as I write this. Historic Christchurch Cathedral has been severely damaged, along with many other buildings and roads.

There's too many disasters going on in that part of the world. While I don't want disasters to happen elsewhere either, Australasia (or whatever regional term you prefer) badly needs a break from all this destruction. :|
    It's all Rodri's fault.

Riots, natural disasters, economic collapse. It the end of the world!

Last time I heard, there were 8 confirmed deaths, but a couple of buses, with passengers, were crushed by buildings so the number definately will be higher.

It's just been breaking news, full coverage for a couple of hours now, on television.
Come to think of it, for 6 hours.

my cousin in christchurch sent a short message saying that the city has 'come down'.

I don't know how to put it better... or worse.

These images show just some of the devestation in Christchurch.

Rescue teams are on the way from Australia and the USA. Also, in a fortunate twist of fate, many Australian doctors were already in Christchurch for a medical conference and are now helping deal with the injured, as best they can. The devestation to the downtown area is extreme. After-shocks are still being felt, which is making search and rescue operations even more dangerous as many buildings are near to the point of total collapse.
