Can somebody tell me why every now and then my food production changes overnight form being positive one day to dropping into negative the next without any other changes whatsoever?

Check your "army movement" tab to see if any troops are reinforcing a valley.
Check your embassy to see if an alliance mate gave you the honor of feeding their troops for them.
Check your production percent. It is common to reduce production to queue a large troop build, but forget to set production back to 100%.

It should show red, but it doesn't. Just a glitch.

No, as I said in my original post I mean my production rates changing overnight when I've done absolutely nothing. No troops going anywhere and no extra troops recruited, no allies doing anything. Absolutely nothing changed but my food production changing by factors of 100k per hour for apparently no reason whatsoever. And rather stupidy, changing back (but only partially) when I sell a bit of lumber!
What's going on?
I really do mean nothing has changed. No buffs, no colonies, no change of mayor or anything. But production at +45k yesterday and -38k today - simple as that.
Yes, looks like a bug but in the meantime I'm losing hard won food reserves hand over fist.
Trained any troops lately?
They'll eat foods....
Really sounds like the FB buff wore off, and its the Heroic Companions one.
There are so many folks that hit it that don't realize what it does (Ive seen in several alliances Ive been in on NA21.)
Most common explanation (but may not be the case for you) is that the hourly production number is comprised of your production plus Colony Tributes. However, Colony Tributes are not added per tick like your production is, it is added 10-12 times (1/10th or 1/12th of total hourly tribute) every 5-6 minutes (I forget the increment). This can lead to a yellow positive per hour production and yet a negative per tick change.
