The largest, was in Chile in the 60's, I believe. That was in the low 9.0s. Several others in Alaska, Somatra, Russia, and then Japan.

Fortunately, Japanese buildings (even the rural ones) are built to withstand these shakes. But look at the pictures, and it still looks terrible.
I was pretty sure the largest was India (don't know when) with 9.5? Could be wrong though.
