OK: I like the thought of an interstellar trip in 2012, so long as I'm not personally taking it. We're not yet ready to do it for ourselves, and the alternative would seem unpleasant.

And for the preceding post: No; I didn't miss your point. I disregarded it as irrelevant.

There ought to be something done. Sending grain shipments in the interim generally feeds only the people that steal or sell grain shipments. On the other hand, the alternative to that would seem to be a Pax Americana, which strikes me as abhorrent. So... yeah; I'm open to suggestions, but I don't send food or pay for it to be sent.

The thing about 12/20/2012 is just a bit of numerology mumbo-jumbo.
Actually, a lot of countries don't even write dates like that. Here in Australia the 20th of December, 2012 is written as 20/12/2012 and don't get me started on the pre-gregorian calendar and what that does to this 'special day'!

As for the state of the world, it is what it is but we just have to do the best we can as individuals and keep working toward a sustainable future. The sooner we get on with it, the sooner we can really start to talk about going to the stars. I would love to be able to get off this planet and travel to the stars but the reality is that it will take most of the rest of my lifetime I think before we see a human land on Mars.

Possibly true, Rodri. And yet... we have the technology now to not only land people on Mars, but to leave them there semi-indefinitely. The difficulty, of course, is making such things profitable, thereby attracting not only corporations but the individuals they employ.

Mining the asteroid belt could be accomplished quite efficiently from a Mars-orbit base; alternately, establishing semi-permanent stations within the belt - or, potentially, just far enough from its orbit to keep chance collisions to a minimum - would be highly effective.

The big question there is this: To what uses would we put the mined materials? Iron, for instance, is quite common on Earth -- so much so, in fact, that the Pennsylvania steel mills are legendary in the lists of nonprofitable businesses.

My own thought is this: The belt would be a wonderful location from which to base independent power generating stations, chemically or nucleally storing the production of large-volume solar plants. Isolating them limits the potential damage from the inevitable accidents.
