A lot of it was down to Suffolk wanting to use Jane Grey as a pawn for his ambitions.
True the protestant cause was used as an excuse to have her proclaimed as Queen. Suffolk "suggested" to the dying King to sign a document proclaiming Jane as his successor.

Here's the thing. Henry VIII, during his reign declared that the succession before his death as Eddie, Mary and then finally Elizabeth. Liz was a protestant too but that's whole different story.

The people were behind Mary as in their eyes she was the rightful Queen, catholic or not. She was warned so was able to cut Jane off during her arrival in London.

Thanks to Infinitus for the epic B'day pressie!

yes I agree, and as to how she was warned and the reason the english people saw the treason in the works is fascinating. what I mean about the battle betweent the churches is this... Charles V sent over an advisor to advise the new Queen Mary, in hopes to bring England back to the fold of the Holy Church. [a battle] for henry took england away from the rule of the church [a battle] then Edward VI not wanting the Crown to go to a 37 yo Catholic declared her and Liz illigitimate as such unfit for the crown. His aim was to not have installed as his successor a Catholic. again intrigue in the battle of the churches. I take no sides, just observing that what has gone on in history plays out in the present. Now the good queen Mary does state that she does not want to rule the intent of her subjects hearts as long as they are loyal to her... BUT the emmisary from spain tells Mary that she must look out for supporters of Lady Jane for once elevated to queen she could be the subject of revolt and there fore they would again use her as a puppet and elevate her again.

for a while Mary does not think her cousin deserves death, but when LJ's uncle starts a rebellion .. QM decides that for the best of England and her reign Lord Guildford that mama's boy and the Lady Jane Grey must DIIIIIIEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
