    Quote from Wikipedia.

The Byzantine Empire (or Byzantium) was the predominantly Greek-speaking[2] eastern part of the Roman Empire throughout Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire was called simply Roman Empire (Greek: Βασιλεία Ῥωμαίων, Basileia Rhōmaiōn)[3] or Romania (Ῥωμανία, Rhōman?a) by its inhabitants and neighbours. Centered on the capital of Constantinople, it was ruled by emperors in direct succession to the ancient Roman emperors after the collapse of Western Roman Empire. As the distinction between "Roman Empire" and "Byzantine Empire" is largely a modern convention, it is not possible to assign a date of separation, but an important point is Emperor Constantine I's transfer in 324 of the capital from Nicomedia (in Anatolia) to Byzantium on the Bosphorus, which became Constantinople, "City of Constantine" (alternatively "New Rome").[n 1]
The Byzantine Empire existed for more than a thousand years (from approximately 306 AD to 1453 AD).

This thread is how rome fell. Rome was sacked in 476. It has NOTHING to do with Byzantium.

Byzantium was the Eastern Roman Empire. It was the Western Roman that fell.

So in a way Rome did continue for another 1000 years, although not in the Classical sense. That's why it was named Byzantium.
The fall of the Western Empire marked the end of the classical era.

Rome was sacked in 410 by the Visigoths & again in 455 by the Vandals. In 476, the last of the Roman Emperors was removed. Rome by then was wasn't the capital of the Western Empire.

Now can we get back to having a bit of a laugh.
