Thread: Please fix the servers

    Default Please fix the servers

okay so im on 147...havent been able to login for an hour, get the classic "network error" dialog box blah blah....had a city refuge over night that had food in it....attacks display their landing time 15 seconds off from the ETA when you send it from the march screen....and when will they actually land well your guess is as good as mine...15-20 second lag spikes trying to time attacks, its flat out absurd, and i cant imagine how it is for people on big super servers.

i know its been said before on the forums, but not being able to login in this morning has driven me over the edge so im ranting, i beg davemata since he seems the only person in evony to even attempt to interact with his customer base, can you please upgrade your servers

lol my server, ss59, is missing war reports after every maintance. I logged in hours after maintance, got 9! onopened reports, BUT only 1! after I clicked on reports. Unfortunately according to evony the ss59 reports should be working, so the complaints (been like this for a week now, since the emergency maintance) are being completely ignored and we are told to clean cache/cookies. The same for the rest of the several bugs on the server.
But lag was so bad yesterday i got booted out after 2min of the clock and could not get back in round 13 server time. And changing hero as mayor took over a min, the same for troop making. And we are supposed to have upgraded hardware!

Sometimes you'll get the network error message when the server is down for maintenance. Once you get the error it can sometimes "persist" because of the way browsers cache data. This isn't something we can fix, unfortunately.

The server has been online all day, so the best way to get around this is clear your flash and temp files in your browser so the game client is "fresh." That will clear up your issue.

i logged in well after maintenance. I cleared those files multiple times to no avail. I know the server wasn't down as I was communicating with alliance mates via skype, that makes it all the worse, my internet is completely fine, its spectacular actually, i was merely unable to login in for over an hour while other people were on fine....

Next time that happens, check your tracert, it often gives an indication where the network connection fails. If the tracert show fine straight to the server, and you can't get it, well then it becomes a very curious situation.

Most folks have no idea what you're talking about Dave

Start -> Run -> type in 'cmd'
In the window that opens type 'tracert 147.evony.com' or whatever your server is.

    Code:
    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

    C:\xxxxx>tracert 147.evony.com

    Tracing route to 147.evony.com [64.156.194.8]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

You're looking for any places where it says it was timed out, got no response, or has huge numbers of miliseconds between "hops" (each line).

I've said this multiple times in the past, but I don't think directly to you, so here's your first...

The way a connection fails with the "network" error is almost always thus.

Client is able to authenticate with the authentication server(s), but when the connection is then passed to the game server(s), the connection fails, resulting in a timeout / failure being passed to the client.

Since the user typically does manage to authenticate, in most typical cases, that rules out the client, including the client's local cache files, both browser cache and Adobe Flash cache.

Most (all?) of the tracert's I've ever seen from people that post about this issue end up passing through CoreSite's Any2 exchange point around Los Angeles. Typically people that have traffic routed via Cogent do not have this issue.

Users having the problem can connect fine with the same equipment if they use a proxy server that gets them a route that avoids the Any2 exchange.

Eventually something happens with something along that Any2 route, and people can again connect without issue.

This is not a problem that a customer can solve. Your company has to get involved with it. It's either a problem with some piece of hardware on your LAN that interfaces with the Any2 routing path(s), something to do with your colocation partner's LAN, or something to do with peering issues between you or your colocation partner's ISPs and CoreSite.

There are also people out there that have chronically sloppy internet connections...

It's not ALWAYS the Evony servers' faults that they are unable to connect.

This has been the traditional "counter-point" of Evony. I understand why you say what you're saying, but that infamous "cane" image I posted demonstrated why what you're saying, and Evony's traditional defense of their stance of not doing anything about it, is nothing but an excuse to do nothing about the issue.

When I say that the user is able to authenticate, I mean that the game client itself has been able to send the user name and password across the internet all the way to Evony's authentication servers and have themselves authenticated. This means that the data packet sent from the client all the way to the authentication servers is good. People that have this issue can verify with someone else in their alliance that their login time shows the same time as the failed attempt, thus the authentication portion is working fine and the database is being updated with the person's last authentication just fine.

What then happens is an internal (to Evony's equipment) process attempts to pass the connection to the appropriate game server equipment. It is at this point where things move from good to bad.

If this is the case, then there is absolutely, positively nothing that the customer can do about it. It is also not the customer's "sloppy internet connections", as the issue is arising inside Evony's facilities and/or their colocation provider's facilities (if they use a colocation provider).

Further proof of this not being a customer-side issue is that players can utilize a proxy server that forces their connection to take a different route and then they no longer have issues. The different route takes place AFTER their ISPs equipment, thus, again, it is not their "sloppy internet connections".

This problem has existed for nearly a year. It began when the company tried to do something about the large increase in the "Incorrect account or password" messages. Both issues revolve around their central authentication server farm. Yes, it is an intermittent problem, and yes, some people never experience the issue, but no, it is not "sloppy internet connections" within the customer's control.
