Sad to say, I have to agree that the average Age II player just doesnt take the time to learn the gameplay mechanics, so an average Age 1 player would whoop the A** of the average Age II player. On the other end of the spectrum though, there are quite a few people who do take the time to learn the gameplay mechanics, and do excel because they put that time and energy into playing the game well. I think these types of players would do well in either Age, because they would be able to adapt and learn just the same, if of course they took the time to learn and adapt.
With Age II vs Age I, I play Age II because that is the Age the friend who introduced me to evony was playing at that time. I liked the aspect of teamwork, and historical cities, and loved being in the alliance I got into, so I stuck with it. Alot of importance is given to teamwork to capture historical cities from the computer as well as from players because of the larger proportion of troops kept in them. Historical cities themselves are a fun NPC to compete over, more so for the bragging rights than the benefits you gain from having them. The main thing that historical cities are used for more often than not is to capture other Historical cities, especially the higher tier ones. The colonization aspect in my opinion isnt too great, and Id rather live without it (in most of the newer Age II servers, there are both the attack and colonization buttons, I tend to just ignore the colonize button lol).
Age I, I havent really had a chance to really play it, but my preemptive impressions about it are that its alot more PvP competitive than Age II, but alot more individual skill-based because of that. With the added aspect of refuge, alot more importance is given to the time you put into the game, so time will reflect more than cash comparatively. The lack of a level cap on heros also means that theres a bigger benefit to farming constantly. Instant heros, and faster troop times in general means that rebuilding is much quicker and the only limiter is how many resources you can accumulate, farm, or buy.
