Any Bass Players?

Among my many interests, some being calculus, physics, and Lady Gaga, is one of my newest: bass guitar. I have a question for anyone informed about the instrument. I've been told that the "right way" to play a bass is to pluck the strings from above, like this



However, I've found that plucking the bass with my thumb like an acoustic guitar is more comfortable for me.

So my question is:

Am I doing it wrong, or does the topic just boil down to personal preference?

The bass players I know all play like shown above.
Offcourse you find it more comfortable playing how you are used to.
You can choose to have your own style of playing I guess, but it's better to just stick with the normal techniques, especially when you are still learning.

Picking with your thumb may seem more comfortable now, but wait till you try to play faster and more complicated arrangements. You'll see then why using your fingers is a must
