Question Help? Really bad luck with my Mac...

So any mac users out there? If so have u ever had really bad luck with your mac hardware?

Couple of months ago I had to get a new fan put in (found out thats because someone i live with is a chain smoker and the smoke wasn't that good for it).

Now literally just today both my cd/dvd drive and 1 of my usb ports quit working quite suddenly. I know for a fact my usb port was working earlier today but now when i've plugged two different things into it, they won't work with it. With my disk drive, it's been acting up for a while (i'd put a disk in and then it would make some funny noises and spit the disk out in the past but usually only once and I'd put it in again and then it would work) now though no matter how many times I put a disk in (i've tried several different ones tonight a couple of times each) it won't stay in it just keeps ejecting after making noises like it's trying to engage but can't.

I realize I will likely have to send it to apple or go to an apple store to get it fixed but any ideas why it would be happening?

Btw I have a Macbook Pro laptop

    Mac Os X
    version 10.5.8

any (NICE) comments would be appreciated..

I wanted to have some input. Serverplayer needs to know there is someone there in times of trouble.

I have a MacBook Pro. I've had mine for two years now but have had no hardware issues. However I did have some issues with my CD drive which Apple Technical support (0844 209 0611[UK] or 1-800-275-2273[US]) managed to help me sort out by rebooting the laptop from the HDD. This may fix your CD drive issues:

    1) Shut down your laptop as you usually do.

    2) Turn on your laptop.

    3) Hold down the option key on the keyboard whilst your laptop is starting up.

    4) Click on the HDD icon and your laptop will load up normally.

Tell me if this fixes your CD drive issues.

As far as fixing your hardware issues, I suggest sending your MacBook Pro back to Apple (if you still have your warranty), if not then take it to an Apple store as see if they can fix it for you.

Sometimes a whole run of Mac issues can be fixed by restarting. I've had my sound system totally go, only to find it running normally after a reboot.

If that doesn't work, I second what ProfX said. Make an appointment with the genius bar at your local store. If you bought the extended warranty (and you should have) it'll be covered for up to 4 years.
Wow ... it's been a really long time.

Professor X, thank you, my usb port is running normally again and i got my CD drive to accept a cd into it, however there are still further issues with the CD drive as it's been an on and off again thing. So I'm going to have a diagnostics done on it just to make sure it isn't something more serious.

Mati2 unfortunately not, about a little over two years ago was my first time getting a mac, before that I was a pc person. I had been told by a friend over and over again about how great macs were and how they never get virus's and never break down (so on and so forth) essentially this laptop is a learning experience for my next one and I haven't really had any major issues other than this to date... I do know I will be getting applecare next time though...

For the record, I did call a mac shop to see how much it would cost to fix both the usb port and cd drive (before I got them semi working again) - they gave me a ballpark range... (as they couldn't narrow it down without seeing the mac) of 300 dollars to 700 dollars... yeah in that case I would just buy a new mac because what the heck would the point be if it were closer to the 700 dollar range?

This experience has made me learn... I still like macs, but next time I'm getting the extended warranty and probably apple care on top of it...
