They could add a credit system. You get points for posting and people can give you their credits for helpful posts. They could also add where you can buy things with the credits.

Whether you call it credit or rep, the system would pretty much work the same. Also, this thread is about an option to hide rep, not about the rep system itself!

If they added credit then rep wouldn't matter. Credit would be given some of your credit to others instead of just adding points to others.

Most people spam to get their post counts as high as they are already; giving them even more arbitrary numbers to inflate with spam would just make the spam even more frequent.
    It's all Rodri's fault.

Essentially it gives someone the ability to be taken on face value of there post instead of there reputation for people who do not know them.

This is the main point. Some clowns in these forums like to spam others with negative feedback and make their reputation go red. Reality is, new players come to the forums for feedback and game advice and so on. They are going to "trust" a poster with many many green boxes more than a poster with a red box. And lord knows, posters like Rasterbee have many green boxes and don't play the game. All they do is chat in Off-Topic section and troll and goof around.
If Evony was serious in any way to actually help new members they would remove the reputation boxes. It is High School level popularity drama. juvenille and just plain silly and pointless to even have in place. All it does is add to forum drama.

Alsair, do something about it. You guys never had reputation until recently. If you never had a need for it before then it won't be missed.

I think it is well known, well amongst 'forum vets' so to speak who is a useful poster and who isnt. An easy way to check how much one contributes to forums is to check the threads that the person has made rather then looking at reputation, which we all seem to consider useless yet still argue about like school children.

There are lots on here now that do spam threads to get their posts counts up, but at one point in time were very helpful parts of the community but eventually got bored of answering the same questions time and time again ...

One point which I would like to raise is, what exactly is considered useful? Is it helping players, or is it making someone crack a smile during a long workday with a funny pic/comment? Or is it the never ending spambot battle, or the publishing of help threads/game equations which are considered helpful?

New forum members and new players of the game don't know who who is who on the forums. They look at the little green boxes for "trust". That is reality. Everything else means nothing if the little green boxes are maxed out. Now, if there WERE no little green boxes then the new poster/member/player will search the forums like you said and try to find quality information by way of searching rather than trusting little green boxes.

God do I miss argueing with you. First off, people majority of the time when they look for help go to mods, or HnQ. Ofcourse they go to a poster with a lot of green bars sometimes, it happens ( they will search for the answer somewhere else if they dont get it there.) but then if they were to remove it then really the people who go to people with a lot of rep might as well go to someone randomly.

And Rasterbee does play the game. I am not sure if he is atm but he is definitely knowledgeable about the game.

On the subject of rep, it needs to be altered a bit, but I don't have the slightest clue in how really :/

Well they would either do that or look to the mods to help them. And do the mods already not have enough on their plates?

EDIT: @Reasoner +1 for beating me to it ... And here I thought I could compete with a Historic poster *kicks dirt*
