    Default Big ocean waves

Being one month away from my eighth ocean crossing (2 Pacific, 5 Atlantic) i have started to wonder again about big rouge ocean waves. Now i am of the opinion that lets say should the earths plates shift violently and cause a massive earthquake the resulting shift in water mass would travel mostly under the surface of the water and not become a big wave or swell until the depth of water considerably shallows meaning that being at sea is a very safe place to be in that situation. On the other hand I've been told that's not the case and that the vessel would get swallowed up by a monster wave
Now I'm no stranger to a big sea, the biggest I've experienced was 35-40 feet swells/waves on the nose for 8 days straight, very uncomfortable and I must say when your in the troth in-between two giant swells you do start thinking hmmmm this could be it!!
Has anybody else been fortunate enough to have such adventures? whether it be crossing oceans, climbing mountains, trekking through rainforests, maybe even a trip to the north or south pole?

I have been deep sea fishing but I can't say I've ever experienced anything hardcore like your stories.

I can say, though, that most of the time, when out in the deep sea, if an earthquake were to occur that would be strong enough to produce a tsunami, you probably wouldn't be in too much danger. This depends on the size of the vessel, however, most large waves like tsunamis do not present real danger until the sea floor begins to rise dramatically. Deep sea fishers are normally safer than beach goers!

But this isn't always the case. Both rogue and tsunami waves have devastated and many times destroyed sea vessels.
By now I'm sure you know the sea is unpredictable.

The wheels of survival are greased more readily by easy lies than hard truths.

Yeah deep sea fishing is cool, I normally have a few lines out when doing crossings, always catch nice big tuna's and stuff, can't beat 30 second old fresh sushi had a massive swordfish on the end of the line once but not for long as the line was not rated for such a big fish, my nice new lure i spent 30mins putting together worked a treat but was gone forever lol

The worst encounter I has with waves was when I was deployed on a Navy ship near the Philippines. After leaving the dock, we ran into the same storm about 4-5 times in our route to Korea and back to Okinawa.
We weren't allowed on deck some of the times due to the severe weather, but I was able to see waves breaking over the deck at one point.

I actually found the ship I was on at the time. What would I do without you Google?
