Thread: Servers

I admit I am somewhat stupid when it comes to the mechanics. But in answer to being able to shut it entirely down. I don't see why they can not, they are able to boot everyone and shut each one down for 15 minutes when they do maintenance. So I don't see what the difference would be. Other than apparently they would rather let some have the upper hand while others can not log in.

During the downtime I was about to get into 153 and 157 (once) with no problem, while my boyfriend wasn't able to get in at all. Didn't notice any lag either lol. And to slap me in the face, Evony continued to give me captchas on 153 up until I was booted and unable to reload the page.

There are people on Facebook complaining that they want compensation. I doubt it's really THAT important in this case.

it isn't, but things happen and evony people aren't miricle workers. It is pretty hard to run a website with a few million people on it and no margin for error

If he lost heroes due to the downtime, he should make a ticket. However if the heroes were at high loyalty it wouldn't drop to 4 in such a short time.

I think he meant the city's loyalty was at 4, Dawn. Not the heroes loyalty.

Anyways, I think they should make sure no one is able to log in when it's a downtime of this size. When the (very large) majority of a server can not login because of problems on evony's side, I think they should completely take it off, if possible.

which I think it almost as simple as just pushing a button. You can take them offline and work on them, as done in maint, so why not do that in a "crisis" like earlier today?
as i understand it, by neko_lord's explanation, the servers are independent of the log-in authentication system...ergo, it is very possibly for those online to stay online and never know there is a problem...

You are correct...they also take down multiple servers whenever they want to, to do updates and such...it seems to me that they could take them down or at least initiate a maintenance which would kick everyone out...

It depends on what fails. If one of the data centers goes offline, anyone already logged into a server hosted from the other data center can stay online.

If the data center that goes offline is Issaquah, then people can log in and remain logged in for servers hosted out of San Diego. Anyone playing on an Issaquah server should be knocked offline. If there is no network connection to the servers, you cannot log into them, nor can you stay online.

If the data center that goes offline is San Diego, it gets a bit tricky. It depends on what exactly fails in SD. If it is only the login servers, then nobody new would be able to log in to any server (hosted from either data center), but people already on would be able to stay on (both data centers), and would not notice a problem until they tried to do something that required a username/password. If the entire network connection to the internet is broken to San Diego, then players on the servers in San Diego would be kicked offline and would not be able to log back in, but players on servers in Issaquah would remain online and only notice a problem until they tried to do something that required username/password.

As for taking everyone offline in a situation like this, if I were a manager, I'd base the decision on whether or not to do that based on the estimated time for resolution of the underlying problem.

However, if I were a manager, I'd really try to address the issue of redundancy a bit better, specifically addressing what ends up just short of the textbook definition of "single point of failure" - the login server farm. It's not quite a SPOF, because it doesn't take everything down with it, but it does cause significant problems that would be alleviated by adding redundancy to that process.
