Which is better?
Killing a few hundred painfully or killing a few thousand peacefully.

Neither. ....
Better?
Killing is bad, period...So get that out of your mind. In before the lock!
I'm assuming this killing is unwarranted by the people being killed (No suicide cults and such) and it's not a form of legal killing. (Lethal Injection or War.)
So with that out of the way, we move onto humanity as the main point here. Does humanity really matter when the person will die anyway? To me it doesn't, (Which is just because I'm cold to emotions). So if you're out with the intent to save as many people as possible then I would say that the inhumane killing is the preferred method.
^ To you guys, say that the killing is required for one reason or another. That it cannot be avoided. What would you do? I'm pretty sure it's obvious that killing no one is better than either choice but that's not the question.
I am saying if for some reason one had to happen. I know killing is bad.
Interesting challenge to utilitarianism. Maximum pleasure for maximum people would support killing a few thousand peacefully, which is an unpalatable view for most of us.

Why are the people being killed?
