    Default Public Sector Strikes.

Today in the UK there have been 24 hour Public Sector Strikes,
This means most of our Teachers, Nurses, Council Workers etc, have stoped work for the day, gone on marches, Protested, or sat down, put their feet up and had a cuppa. All this is over our government cutting the state pension they will recevive when they retire.

Im not sure how people from other countrys will respond to this thread as this does not affect you, or you may not even understand why this is happening or have even heard about it, But I would like to know peoples views on it.

My facebook feed has been lighting up all day with posts and comments about the strikes, Many debates have started. Personally i support the strikers.
Ive heard stories of what the marches and protests in London are doing, Causing delays for people. Has anyone witnessed these? Or been affected by them?

For those of you who want to know the background of whats happening these are some easy reading links:
    BBC News Public Sector Strike
    BBC News, Live and Latest

The way i see it is our country cannot run with out these people. The government should cut their own wages & pensons!

No the riots were about some one getting shot by the police then it all spiralling out of control and the riots and looting spread nationwide. That was a disgrace.
This is all legal where unions and gone on strike from work to oppose the planned changes and cuts to their wages and pensions.

With the strikers for sure on this one.

I never understood the logic of slandering people who fight for the wages/pensions they were promised. I guess everyone is supposed to roll over and take the "tough medicine" and not say much about it.

Either way, it is not right to take away their promised pension on one hand while taking every measure possible to make sure certain industries do not collapse.

just wanted to make sure before i said i support it...the british government has a lot of work to do, and i dont think that they understand the needs of the average person.

As someone who didn't have to go to school today, i think these strikes are wonderful

And no emma, as far as i'm aware these protests are kept peaceful. The London riots are a whole different story entirely.

    I don't support the strikers

The government are doing the right things to try and solve the problems that Labour have given us If they could afford the pensions as before, then the striking might be OK, but as it is, they still get a good pension (on average twice as good as private sector workers, or so I heard somewhere) and the government can't afford to give them more

... I don't think that can possibly be true. I know retired civil servants and firefighters in Britain who don't get pensions like that.

This is real simple folks, if you believe in democracy and civil society, you need to support all kinds of representative groups, a category including unions.

If the government cant afford it, why dont they cut their own wages and pensions? That would go along way to helping the country and gaining support from more people. Insted they cripple the people we need to run the country. Where would we be without these people?

They should cut their wages and not increase the wages of the public sector.
