Yeah, they should If they haven't already, which I don't know if they have

And the public sector workers have hardly been crippled Far from it, they've been comparitively well off for so long, they don't want to lose even a tiny portion of that

How many politicians are there? How many public workers are there? If the politicians were to cut their wages and benefits it wouldnt make a huge difference. I would say that cutting their wages/benefits would show that the government is still willing to rule for the good of the people, but i think that ship has long sailed.

Right now we are faced with two huge, looming economic problems. Recession and an ageing population. I don't feel that the taxpaying younger generation should have to foot the enormous bill for public sector pensions. They do receive a lot more than private sector employees already. People are living much longer and more money is needed to pay for their retirement. If the older people themselves aren't willing to pay, that saddles young people with that deficit in a time where lots of younger people struggle to get jobs at all. It's not about just "rolling over." The money to support the elderly when they retire has to come from somewhere and either it comes, at least in part from the would-be pensioners themselves, or the younger generation gets stuck supporting them through an extra decade of life. It sounds crass to put it in those terms, but when people approaching retirement age started working there was no way for the govt. to predict how much longer they would live or how few children they would have.
Vaccinations FTW ... all kidding aside we are soon going to have the same issues here in Canada, mainly the young getting taxed to death so that the old can get sponge baths but we are watching this closely to see what is in store for us in ten years ...

I do not support these strike on the whole, i do have certain levels of sympathy for nurses and slightly less for teachers.

But i don't see why the wee wifey that works in a council office as a receptionist should get higher pay, more holidays, better pension and earlier retirement age than the wee wifey working next door in the private sector. These strikes are not to create equality, they are fighting to keep unfair privileges.

Pensions and Unions are part of the reason the entire globe is in this economic mess. While I don't have any objection to those striking, one must realize that if the credit ratings of countries like France and Britan are downgraded, people earning these pensions could potentially recieve far less than what their benefits are being cut to now, likely with additional problems (increased unemployment rate, weaker markets & currency, etc).
