Default What does a blind person see?

Ok, so apparently, blind people can not see. Makes sense. What we do we see when we close our eyes? Black. What does a blind person see? Nothing. I just don't understand it. How can it be nothing. What is nothing? What does nothing look like? Nothing can't look like anything. But I can not comprehend such a thing. Do blind people say they see nothing because they don't know what black is? Or do they truly see nothing? What about those who were not blind, and became blind sometime in their life? According to them, it's the same thing. Nothing. Not black. Nothing.

    Drives me crazy.

What about someone that has been blinded? They would have the concept of black.

Well it's a hard this to describe I would imagine. But because people who once saw before that are no blind, they're able to explain it better. I think the whole black vs nothing thing is really just a preference for people and what they say. When you ask someone what do you see? They will say, nothing. Because to them, they lost the one luxury that everyone takes for granted, and once its lost you realize the true meaning of "nothing"

There's also different degrees of blindness, some people may very well just see nothing (as in black or blank) and some people may see shapes. It all depends on where along the anatomy of the eye, things went defective. I assume if someone has had their eye removed, or their optic nerve went defective, there would be just complete darkness (as in blackness). For other people though it may be dark cloudiness. When your eyes are closed, whether blind or not we all see the same thing (the blackness).

And yes for people who were blind their whole life, nothing just means nothing. They can't distinguish between colors in their head, because colors are impossible to describe without seeing them first. It's hard to describe anything to blind people. The only way I would imagine is having ball and saying this is a sphere or circle and so on.

I personaly didnt like the tone it which you wrote this. Maybe its just me or cause I have a blind friend. But to say it drives you crazy for a blind person to say they dont see anything?. They are blind..

But more ontopic. There is no way to not see anything. Air is invisible and you cant see it. What I imagin they see is black. Think of it this way. When you are in pitch black no light at all. You say you cant see anything. You dont say you see black.

I work with three people who are blind, they type on a braille keyboard and our system can be set up for people who are blind. We also take calls for the deaf, hard of hearing, and speech impaired. Now I don't know what they would say to your questions/comments, but I'm sure if they read it exactly how you wrote it they would likely be offended.

I know that there is deaf culture in which you can look up facts, and while there is not a easy to find blind culture, you can still look up things on the internet. If you're really that curious I suggest you do, but please I beg of you - if you do ask someone who's blind phrase it in a different way and don't say "drives me crazy" at the end because that just seems insensitive as hell. (you know because they could be thinking "I'm sorry my disability drives You crazy, I'm sorry my answers don't appease you, be happy you don't have to live with it and just accept the answers for what they are.")

Anyway I'm off my soap box now, probably didn't make much sense but death your post kind of ticked me off.

I didn't read the op as saying the answer of nothing drove him crazy. I interpreted him as saying the not knowing as driving him crazy. As the sort of person who touches wet paint, shakes and squeezes gifts and even reads the small print on train tickets i can see where he's coming from. Its the not knowing thats the killer.

To stay on topic i have no idea if blind people see black, or nothing, or anything else for that matter. It is interesting to think about though

Is it just me or is the height of stupidity to ask this question in a written-word forum that no blind person will ever read?

The question is pretty much meaningless anyway. It's a bit like asking a stupid person what they are thinking, the obvious answer is nothing much.
