    Default ss56 captchas & lag

    Waiting for the "official announcement" for emergency maintenance shutdown for ss56... Many cannot log in at all... those that are in game have such severe lag that they cannot do anything.

    It looks to me like our initial change to the report system interfered with bots. This caused bots to be disconnected and thus there was no lag for anyone. Based on your reports of lag returning, it appears that some bots have found workaround for the report change, and thus they are bombing our servers with commands and causing lag again for everyone.

    If you want to blame someone for the lag, blame the makers and users of bots. They have zero regard for you, for the game, or for any other players. They selfishly hog enormous amounts of bandwidth and processing power with excessive and unnecessary commands. The advantage they get is often minimal, but they care about nothing and no one but themselves.

    We are doing everything in our power to prevent bots. Many things we can do to interfere with bots (like Captcha) are unpopular with players. Other things are impractical. There is no Silver Bullet or perfect solution. We're trying our best to get rid of them, and our engineers are continuing to work on more effective solutions.

    Its not a simple problem and its not going to go away over night, but we are working on it. We all wish there was a quick and easy solution, but sometimes, there just is not.

    Dawn, have you guys investigated HackShield Pro? They're one of the systems used by Joymax to prevent botting. It doesn't always catch everyone the first sweep, but it does thin them out little by little. They offer a 1 month free trial to see if it works or not.

    Only thing to get botters away from their bots, is to give them a very clear reason NOT to. In other words, the devs are trying to come up with ways to make botting such a huge disadvantage for players that they have almost no choice BUT to stop and play fairly and honestly.

    I have to say that's a tough question to find the solution to, and we are all itching for that answer to be in our hands right here, right now. Sadly, it's only going to get worse if we're constantly all over their throats about it; they're merely going to get bogged down by explaining that they don't in fact have a genie rather than actually working to get rid of the botters.

    There's a million programs Evony could use.. or even develop themselves if they hire the right programmers.. Problem is deciding with option is best.

    I had that impression that the 3rd party software were gone.

    Something simple like

    taking a small piece of the letter or number away in a random fashion in the reports, most humans will be able to join the gaps ?

    sorting the report into a random order ?

    much make them go away again for a long time ?

    I do like the idea of humans and return of chat in the game

    Bot or no bots, here's the real scenario, Dawnseeker: with Captcha - HUGE LAG; without Captcha - NO LAG. It's really quite simple, and given I've been playing since beta was released, don't you dare turn around to me a tell me that it's my internet connection.

    Stop spouting utter crap to your customers and start telling us the truth. The fact is that without Captcha running on the server, we don't experience lag because we're not all holed up trying to decipher and input a code that freezes up game play.
