I love the idea of AI in any form in this game. The combat mechanics are the biggest problem there is. I wouldn't mind if say you attacked a barb city and it counter attacked you every hour until your city was destroyed and then they barb towned it so that your city would join their ranks.
This would make players seriously weigh the cost of farming NPC's also it really would make it like the barbarians were a threat. Presently other players are not a threat, NPC's are not a threat and the only concern is whether or not your men will starve to death.
Also if NPCs would randomly attack your valleys and steal them there would be a reason to risk attacking the NPC towns.
I personally would feel better losing hundreds of thousands of men to hostile barb towns then to lose them all to starvation because there isn't enough food anywhere in sight.
Although if one were to consider the number of barb towns at the start of the server compared to the number of barb towns today it would appear that the NPC's were winning this battle for land.
