You don't need to remove layers when using a true jaq. That's the entire purpose of using one. Kill range before layers.

Now, In a normal cav/phract smack there are multiple ways to remove layers.
Some people say rams. Some say phracts. Both are correct answers.
You can remove cav/phracts on the defense with layered pike waves, they are surprisingly effective.
Pikes/swords can be removed with pike waves/sword waves as well, albeit at slower pace than removing the horses.
works/wars won't even need to be removed in certain cases, but when you need to kill them cav will do fine. (or more pike bombs if you want)
These were methods of removing layers when the defense was ALREADY a CD.
There are a lot of different defensive setups, so its hard to answer all of these questions accurately.
If the defense is in a 5.2k setup (traps/abatis/trebs present) the easiest way to remove layers is mechs or archer RBs depending on your troop levels.
Unless there are fewer than 500 of each range setter, it would probably be quicker and easier to just use hammers or mechs to kill the defense.
------------------------------------------------
Those things being said, I'll go ahead and say this: 95% of the time it is going to be FAR easier to just use mechs.
Steps for fighting a standard 5.2k defense with mechs: send Mech waves untill only balls/pults left on defense, Scout bomb, hammer for cleanup. Simple, can be done with timed waves in 2-5 seconds.
To fight a 5.2k with a cav smack/jaq would take far longer as you have to spam out range setters, half an hour at the least.
Steps to fight a CD with mechs: Mech once. Mech it again. Mech it some more. Mech it until you get a blue line. Easy.
To do so with a cav smack, once again far more time consuming. You have to take out layers, one group at a time. Then set up the smacks.
EDIT: Just realized this was in the age2 thread, so not entirely sure anything I posted as far as clearing layers is applicable to age2 with its weird leadership/star level business.
