if you are running a CD and under attack and you want to manipulate the battle mechanics so that your ranged units receive as less damage as possible you really only have one option, and this option will only stop 1 attack out of every 9/10 waves that hit you (presuming the attacker is not a fool and times his attacks close together) have your polly hero maxed out with a W.O.N applied and build ATs 1 at a time, 1 AT takes about 15 seconds to build with a 15 set lv100 hero. ATs are the only thing that stop attacking range units from targeting defending range units and having 1 AT in place will make the attacking range unit wave go splat. but like i said that's just 1 AT every 15 seconds so unless your attacker spaces out his waves every 15 seconds your range units are still in trouble.
in all honesty i still think that if you need to ask these sort of questions then your doing something wrong. read a battle mechanics guide they really are quite helpful...

Just 1 AT wont be enough due to the split damage rule. 15 to 20 will be enough
