Thread motivation
I'm starting this thread for two reasons.
- Firstly to alert Evony to parties trying to use Evony as a vehicle for fraud and money laundering.
- Secondly to alert players on the various servers of these scammers.
While a player could post the relevant emails to Evony via other mechanisms, actioning such issues will take time. In the period from reporting such a scammer to Evony terminating the abusive account, people could have been defrauded. While purchasing accounts is against the Evony TOS, fraud and money laundering is a much more serious issue.
As such this thread.
Scam Methodology
A scammer creates and account on a server. He then looks for a strong player whose name can be impersonated by changing a character so that it is hard to spot the difference between the real and fake account.
Typical candidate characters are
- i and I (eye) - changed to a lowercase l (el) or 1 or vice versa
- O (oh) changed to a 0 (zero) or vice versa.
As an example, say JOE has a strong account, scammer J0E may suddenly spam unsuspecting players with an ingame mail. He'll say he is selling his account or a hero. He'll try to lure you and offgame place like Skype. here you will be asked to use an anonymous payment method like MoneyGram or Western Union to pay.
Once you pay, you never get the account, or if you do, it's a civilian account.
Where I have dug into this issue, it appears these parties are extremely organized and out to target the community.
What to post here
- The server
The party that contacted you. If in an email, it's best to press reply and copy the name form there with by highlighting it and either right-click-copy there and right-click-paste here, or ctrl-C in the game and ctrl-V here.
- The mail content or the content of the chat.
- Any other additional resources used by the scammer like email addresses or accounts.
General
Please let's not troll this thread. Yes we all know the scammer spam us players. That's why we can alert the community to them in a civilized way while allowing Evony staff to do their bit.
