I understand the feeling that Broken Gates will force people to play and learn defense but what actually happens is that with the huge numbers of the item available,
it is being used to flatline cities when a person is either not there or can be completely overwhelmed by multiple accounts hitting. In some cases, it might take
days but the writing is on the walls.
When the item was rare, defending with Broken Gates was a reasonable expectation. It didn't last too long and you'd get a chance to rebuild if you weren't there
or if you got overwhelmed. You probably wouldn't get smoked multiple times in a row, either.
When the item was sold in the shop, a lot of accounts, mains and many, many alts with many, many coins bought a lot of them. You'd maybe have a chance to recover
and rebuild a defense.
When the powers of Evony decided to give Broken Gates away free to every account out there, including tons of noob fillers, that was the tipping point.
Every attack these days comes with broken gates and none of us are here 24/7. Defending means having troops and you won't have any left.
There is the alternative of collecting and maintaining many, many feeder accounts to support millions of archers and millions of mech, a form of defense which
isn't really defending or playing.
So, people are staying in holiday, selling/giving away their accounts, or voting with their feet and quitting the game.
The saturation of Broken Gates forces gates open but it's not about teaching anyone to play or defend.
