To the hardcore gamer this is war. That's why you see so many post stressing the "war" in war game while discounting the "game" end of it. That's why you see such contrasting approaches to this game. Some still play it on the up and up (no need to go into specifics here) and leave servers before mech wars get heavy while others don't feel the server actually begins until heavy mech begins.
I became disheartened with this game a few years back after various aspects were made commonplace that changed how the game is played. These things made the game better for some and completely ruined the game for others. I was one of the latter and left evony for about a year. I returned a few months ago with a different approach to this game and it's made my experience here much better. I no longer coin and I move on to new servers after playing the game legally is no longer feasible. It's made my personal experience here much better. Now I don't have to worry about losing anything I've invested in and I can play the game with at least a shade of semblance to what evony was back when this game was enjoyable to all.
