This is the way it should be! I'm kind of surprised that this part of the article got past their editors, though.
Living things find solutions to problems and we help them survive. Yes, I consider plants and animals to be biological technology. Just because we're made of cellular machines doesn't mean we're like a hammer or toaster - there's emergent properties. There comes a point where you're patenting life and mathematics. You shouldn't be able to do that. There's supposed to be a difference between an art and the science behind it.
