You would think that common sense would tell you the pikemen would stand guard on the front lines of anything you've read/seen from history. You would figure they would line up in front of the archers with pikes ready and guarding.
But then you can argue the cavalry would come around from the rear to attack the archers, but pikemen don't typically charge in for an attack... That's the swordsman's responsibility, so would it be too hard for the pikemen to set up around the archers?
I, too, believe the pikeman on the game is a little low in defense power. Pikemen were created as a main source of defense, and it appears they're not doing their job in this game.

All I can say to both of you is this:
Stop making pikemen because they're not worth it.
Any combat situation I have they die and the archer's die... Not the swordsmen even though I have greater numbers of them.

Just my opinion.
I feel ya, but this is sort of how I view the situation, all the units are clumped at the start of battle, having not yet advanced properly (kinda silly but whatever), the enemy cav with their incredibly horse speed (super stallions!) zip at breakneck speed towards their enemies, if they encounter pikemen they charge their horses into the pikes (isnt this often what happened?) and as they went flying off their horses to their deaths, they pulled out their sword, aimed it at a nearby archer and flew kamikaze into the poor doomed archer.
