I'm just doing up this as three part email to send to my alliance. It gives the basics of how heroes work. I just wanted to run it by a few long term players please feel free to comment or critique as long as it's constructive.
Hero Guide Part 1
Heros are an extremely important part of the game, however, there a certian amount of luck involved so you have to check your Inn often in order to get lucky. Here's how Heros work as far as I can tell.
Choosing a Hero:
First of all you need Heros to take troops in to battle so it's a good idea to make your Feasting Hall one level bigger than your Ralley Point so you can maximize you rally point slots. Second of all upgrading your Inn, to say level 3 is also good, so you can have a bigger pick of the litter. When you pick a Hero look for low level and high attributes. A hero that has any particular attribute (Intelligence, Politics, or Attack) more than 67, and is no higher than level 2 is a good candidate.
Hero Guide Part 2
How Attributes Work:
Now, the three attributes that you have concern yourself with are Attack, Politics, and Intelligence. To get the benefits of any attribute, you have to appoint that Hero as Mayor. For example, when you need to build up your army select a Hero that has the highest Attack for Mayor, and your troops training times will decrease. High Intelligence will shorten the time it takes to get technology upgrades, and high Politics increases resource production rate, while shortening the time it takes to construct or upgrade a building. For this reason, it is wise to have a Mayor, with high Politics at all times, unless you're upgrading your sciences or training troops.
Hero Guide Part 3
Experience:
Most think the only was a Hero can gain a lot of experience experience at once is through fighting battles, this is the most common way however, there is at least one other way. You can gain experience through the Mayor position, and contrary to popular belief you can get lots of experience all at once if you time it so that a Hero is Mayor during a the time that a construction or upgrade is completed. Which ever Hero is Mayor at the time will get a chunk of experience all at once; not just a trickle, and you can upgrade low level Heros quickly by doing this.
Note:As far as I can tell attributes don't have anything to do with mission results, but level does. I might be wrong on this one, but is seems to me choosing a Hero with a high attack, for instance, has no affect on the outcome of a battle.*
*Let me know if I'm wrong on this one and I will change my guide accordingly.

Because defence buildings are built directly onto the city, it is your Politics hero that will shorten construction time, not your attack hero.
You're absolutely right.
12m gain is a hell of a lot better than 1.4m gain.
Finding an untouched lvl5, now that's another story altogether :P
My apologies to Savemesatan but you're absolutely right.I will change it immediately and thanks for spotting it. DOH!!
actually i just realised i used the wrong numbers
i used 120k per resource when its really 180k so its more than 12.2mil
yea it must be easier on the newer server, since i've built several npc farms around my cities
i think it should be noted this upgrade is only effective at the time of purchase, if a high attack hero is put in after they are already training, it wont do anything, alternativly, you can appoint him for a second to buy your troops, then put the politition back in and they will still train faster.
