Thread: Importance of Range: Explained

This is an excellent discourse on the importance of unit range in battle; The only way to make it better is to link it to another equal discourse about unit speed.

While I admit to having developed a quite successful (thus far) combined arms battle force, I'm entirely too lazy to explain my reasoning and purpose for how I came up with the ratio for the mix. Perhaps someone else already has (and I missed it) or someone else is willing to expend the time to do so and link it here?

Regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look upon them as your own beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death. If, however, you are indulgent, but unable to make your authority felt; kind-hearted, but unable to enforce your commands; and incapable, moreover, of quelling disorder: then your soldiers must be likened to spoilt children; they are useless for any practical purpose.-Sun Tzu's Art of War

    I have a question.

    Hypothetical situation:

Two armies of equal archery level fight each other. One is in a town that does not have it's gates open, and only has archer's towers. The two armies stack up like this:

Defenders: 2,000 Archers towers (using base archery, though I know this can't happen) at 1,300 range max.

Attackers: 50 Ballistas (using base archery again) at 1,400 range max.

The question is, would the Ballistas move? Obviously the archers towers can't, but they're out ranged by the ballistas, so they can't fire either. Would the Ballistas be able to just get however many free shots at the Archer's towers, or would they move up and attack? (And if it's the latter, it begs the question, what idiot hero did you send?)

Edit: Or to clarify the question. If the defenders can't move, and the attackers out range them, do the attackers automatically win?

Don't mind me, I'm just a few slices short of a whole cake, and a few cards full of a short deck.

But you can build up to level three or four cottage with speed up, not just level one. It's more like five or six prestige per five minutes, or 5*12 (60) prestige an hour. Then add on the prestige for comforting, 25 an hour, and you will gain 85 prestige per hour times your number of cities. I have five cities so this equals 425 prestige per hour, not all that bad, many people have more cities.
