The game was never going to be really free forever.
The freemium (what a crap term) model is always going to restrict progression for players who don't want to pay. Otherwise far less people would pay and the game wouldn't generate money.
The trick is to find a balance in terms of making progression difficult and where it should be capped for the non-paying players which encourages people to try the game and keeps the community vital, and entices enough of those players into paying in order to generate a profit.
Scripts/certain medals were possibly too easy to come by in the days of valley farming. Then they became too difficult to obtain with the defence buffs.
If the game remains as is - and/or further prohibits non-paying players in terms of removing non-organic NPC cities - the playerbase will die out in my opinion.
