I'm not sure what causes the "stuck at 1 loyalty" syndrome (I've never experienced it, cities for me have always dropped from 1 to 0 as easily as they did 15 to 1), but I've knocked cities with abatis (upwards of at least 1500) to 0 and capped them before.

    It's all Rodri's fault.

Thanks, that's good to know, although frustrating that I had to spend so much extra time (and wasted a bunch of cavalry destroying the abatises in the hopes that that was the hangup) on some sort of glitch. Hopefully it'll work right next time.

The reason I thought it was a hero loyalty issue is that partway through the battle reports started showing a different hero. I don't believe the player was online to switch mayors, since there was no other effort made to save the city.

I've had that before too, Loyalty being stuff at 1 for a long time and part way through the heroe changed twice, from a L30 to a L20 to a L4, so I'm guessing the heros at the city must affect something.

I have taken cities with their abatis intact. So dont know if thats it or not. The other day I was working with someone on taking a "few" cities at the same time. Started on one and had to shift all my focus to another one for a bit. When turned back to the original one.. it had been more than 30min.. the loyalty dropped a LARGE amount.. just on its own.

If you nail a city hard enough that public grievance gets high and the population leave, it drives loyalty down. I've been wondering lately if attacks below 15 loyalty have any effect on the loyalty at all, if its not just the public grievance that does the final 15 points for you.

The only reason I still attack below 15 loyalty is to push that public grievance over the top.

My post was meant as a joke. I didn't intend for you to actually try it.

That said, don't ever do it again - you'll lose far more than you'll ever gain.

Yeah, I think that's the reason to keep attacking when loyalty is below 15. At that point my battle reports stopped showing the usual "loyalty -1" and just said "public grievance 1" and then whatever the actual loyalty was. I don't know if the extra public grievance really made a difference to the speed at which the loyalty dropped, but it went pretty quick after that.

biggest thing ive notices as far as loy being stuck is if they only have 1 city you CANNOT take it you can hit it all day long at 1 or 0 and you will never get it. So check to see how many cities they have before you try to take one.
