    Default Battle Sequence

what's list above makes sense. From what I could tell, battles works like this.

    (credit to Thermyte for this)

From experimenting with Exercises, it looks as if the basic way Combat works is as follows:

Units start at whatever the maximum range for any unit involved. Really this only matters when Archers are involved, although Ballistic and Catapults may make a difference as well.

Ranged units Fire and Melee units Advance. So with Archers, Range 1200, against Pikemen, Speed 300, the Archers get 4 rounds of free fire. After that an surviving enemies are in HTH and the fun begins.

Reasonable so far. What is just insane is that any Melee Troops on your idle (if you have Archers and the enemy does not) are eager to fight and advance at maximum rate as well.

So 100 Archers vs 100 Pikemen kill then all in 4 rounds just as they would be getting in range. Add in some Pikes or Swords to defend the Archers and they rush forward to attack and engage in Round 3.

So 1000 Archers vs 1000 Pikes kill all the Pikes with no losses. Add in 100 Pike along with the Archers and they run forward to get slaughtered. There should be a way to tell units to hold their ground and let the Archers do their work.

So if you add in a pikeman, since the pikeman is faster than a warrior, first round all the archers shoot and kill 1 pikeman (he has 1500 arrows sticking out from him). Without the pikeman, the archers shoots the warrior first round and kills 1500 of them. The more additional unit types you add, the less the slow warriors get shot at and survive to melee the archers.
