Dude, this is just a game, and in reallity a pretty basic text based game. There are no real archers "to line your walls", just groups of numbers that you need to activate in a certain way to have them interact with another players groups of numbers.

The way that you get those particular groups of numbers to interact in a defensive situation is to activate them by ticking the box in the window called "Rally Point" that is marked "Open the gates to fight".
This will bring all of those groups of numbers known as your army into play against another players group of numbers.

Learning how those two groups of numbers interact is the key to being succesful in this game.

That doesn't actually answer the question. I understand that technically the said archers are simply a variable in a series of calculations, but for simplicities sake and in the spirit of playing a game which benefits from a certain amount of imagination - I am asking the question as if they were real archers.

    1. Do you have to open your gate for archers to attack the enemy?

    2. If yes - Why can't they stand on the walls? Seems stupid to me.

    3. Is it better to open your gates or close them? if the answer is 'it depends' what are the variables which dictate which option is better?

Because the game-makers made it that way.

It does depend, it depends if you think your army is big enough to take out the attacking army with minimal losses. At the point your at keep your gates closed and protect what army you have then once you have lots of archers, high walls and high archery tech break them open and no-one will attack you unless you really **** them off.

Thanks, that's a much more helpful, constructive and informative answer!

Open gates if you think you can win a in coming attack with the combination of your wall defence And your troops.. Al tho allot of newer players don't open gates in case they are attacked at night and fear loosing their troops..

Your archers towers will defend you whether the gates are opened or closed.. Your archers will only defend you if the gates are opened...
Gates open = ALL troops and wall units enter the combat..
Gates closed = Only the wall units enter the combat..

Also, always have LOTs of scouts to help keep people from getting a successful report on you.. But this also depends on open gates.. If you have more scouts then they send and open gates your scouts will fight theirs.. If you have more scouts you will win and they don't get a report.. If you have less scouts then they win your scouts die and they get their report..

Troops are troops, wall defences are wall defences. All troops are stored in the rally point. All wall defences are stored on the wall.
The biggest problem with leaving your gate open is that a superior 'army' will completely wipe out your 'army'.
The problem with leaving gates closed is a smaller army could destroy your wall defences and steal all your resources.
If they want your city they can then send cavalry attacks to keep dropping your loyalty. If they know what they are doing, they will know that when your loyalty drops to 6 or 5, your gates will open and they will have sent a decent size attack to destroy your army. From there it is not too long before your loyalty drops to 0 and they will capture your city.

Here is a tip, build thousands of scouts and leave your gates open. If someone scouts you with less scouts than you have, you will win a scout war and they will get no report, except that their scouts were killed. This is enough to give most players pause and perhaps make them look elsewhere.

Just open your gate in the rally spot and there is a little box that said open gate to fight and if he is about to attack u attack him first and steal all his food so his man will die
