Anyone who wants balance in their cities has a fundamental lack of what it takes to succeed in early server play. Someone who wants to dominate early PvP, without npc farming, shouldn't bother leveling anything other then archery, compass, and the wood harvesting tech over level four or five. Throw in some mil science, metal casting and construction when research times get too long, and you are fine.
Have all resource slots set to sawmills save 3, have no more then nine cottages, six would be ideal, and do not bother building barracks over level 4 and no one has anything to fear from a mech bat.
Also, no one said you could make catapults in BP, and there is no reason to. With high enough walls ballista outrange cats. Catapults are nothing but an end game affectation players indulge in when they have nothing left to do.
400 cats, rams, and ballista can not turn the tide of battle. That force is nothing next to the wall buff.
Newbie protection is all about building up sufficient military might to survive the short PvP rush five to seven days into the server's creation. That is the only reason it exists. The quests even tell you this. Those who ignore that fact are going to get slaughtered with or without mech bats on the wheel.
Those who acknowledge that fact really have nothing to worry about post wall patch. So long as they do not get greedy and slaughter their army on another city's defenses, they have nothing to worry about unless someone gets ten mech batts.
The idea that mech batts are impossible to defend against is just silly.
