    Besides the obvious Marie Curie.

Here are two more you can use to name your heroes.

    Hypatia of Alexandria.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypatia_of_Alexandria

Hypatia of Alexandria (pronounced /haɪˈpeɪʃə/ in English) (Greek: Ὑπατία; born between AD 350 and 370 – 415) was a Greek[1][2] scholar from Alexandria in Egypt,[3][4] considered the first notable woman in mathematics, who also taught philosophy and astronomy.[5] She lived in Roman Egypt, and was killed by a Christian mob who blamed her for religious turmoil. Some suggest that her murder marked the end of the Hellenistic Age,[6][7] although others observe pagan philosophy continued to flourish until the age of Justinian in the sixth century.[8]

A Neoplatonist philosopher, she belonged to the mathematical tradition of the Academy of Athens represented by Eudoxus of Cnidus;[9] she followed the school of the 3rd century thinker Plotinus, discouraging empirical enquiry and encouraging logical and mathematical studies.[10]

There was a woman at Alexandria named Hypatia, daughter of the philosopher Theon, who made such attainments in literature and science, as to far surpass all the philosophers of her own time. Having succeeded to the school of Plato and Plotinus, she explained the principles of philosophy to her auditors, many of whom came from a distance to receive her instructions. On account of the self-possession and ease of manner, which she had acquired in consequence of the cultivation of her mind, she not unfrequently appeared in public in presence of the magistrates. Neither did she feel abashed in going to an assembly of men. For all men on account of her extraordinary dignity and virtue admired her the more.[10]

And, if you want personal accolades from the man himself, Einstein, try some Lise Meitner.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lise_Meitner

Lise Meitner was part of the team that discovered nuclear fission, an achievement for which her colleague Otto Hahn was awarded the Nobel Prize. Meitner is often mentioned as one of the most glaring examples of scientific achievement overlooked by the Nobel committee.[2][3][4] A 1997 Physics Today study concluded that Meitner's omission was "a rare instance in which personal negative opinions apparently led to the exclusion of a deserving scientist" from the Nobel.[5]

Meitner also first realized that Einstein's famous equation, E = mc2, explained the source of the tremendous releases of energy in atomic decay, by the conversion of the mass-defect into energy.[13]

Meitner refused an offer to work on the project at Los Alamos, declaring "I will have nothing to do with a bomb!"[17]

Einstein himself respected Meitner and called her "our Marie Curie."[4]

Why would we not have computers without her? She came up with a novel way of manipulating a machine that was someone elses idea, and wasn't actually built. She didn't do this alone but in correspondence with others to boot.

I don't mean to downplay the female contribution to this world, but grandiose statements like that are just wrong if they are unwarranted by merit.

Why is this thread still open ? The op only knows names from pop culture and any serious suggestions will go straight over his head. Might as well suggest Paris Hilton or Britney Spears. At least those might be names the op is familiar with.

I'm a fan of Radia Perlman, the inventor of the spanning tree protocol and the IS-IS internet routing protocol.

There is also Priscilla Oppenheimer, a networking guru of some renown.

We might not be playing this game but for their efforts.
