Plenty of ancient cultures knew the earth was round, such as they mayans, aztecs, egyptians, even as far back as the sumerians. They all studied astronomy and from the curvature of the earth and the movement of the starts (wich were used as a calander) they knew the earth was round.

It was only when the masses were ruled by the roman catholic church and kept in ignorance were they led to believe the earth was flat.
