Wormholes are much more intricate, complicated things. It's entirely possible that they might be able to transport matter over vast distances (Stargate demonstrates that theory, though somewhat poorly), or even across time.

I haven't even heard any theories on wormholes, so this is pure speculation based on what I know of them.
