hmm, whilst not the big katana fan, being more of a longsword person, there is little advice i can offer, but having a read through this topic as pointed out a few things to add to my sword knowledge.

Sword... mating... how...
You're a sick person, you know that, Drizz? And it's not a ******* sword, it's an all-purposes sword.
Speaking of all-purposes, would you buy a tool that's a crowbar, with a hammerhead on the non-curved end, and a screwdriver sticking out of the top of the hammer head? That's how I'm going to make my fortune. It's the Hammerscrewcrow. Like it?
(That's not the real name. Only Drizz would do something like that.)
OMG that just reminded me!! of KNIFE WRENCHHH!!!!! (practical and safe!)

didnt read this whole ppost (tired) but ill give you a few pionts from my buying swords(though i only use gladius' and broadsswords)
1 make sure the balance feels good for you (try some stick fighting) i prefer heavier grips and lighter blades cause i like the machete like feel
2 make sure SURE SURE its good steel go online and reseach steel quality i would tell you the ranks but cant remember em
3 make sure it can hold a edge
3.5 learn how to sharpen blades i sharpen every single sword poocket knife and spear i own stones are cheap so no worrys
4 and last but not least if you go out for trianing find someone who knows what they doing real experts are many many many times better than noobs who think they can fight with a sword
