But how are the authorities to know if they are mentally unstable if the parent shows no signs prior to the incident?

Well a lot of mother's develop post partum depression after they have children. So they're not necessarily mentally unstable beforehand. Some women that have depression beforehand don't end up killing their children.
There was another man who, after abusing a certain illegal substance, essentially maimed his child's eyes, one of them meeting the same fate as this child's brain. You just never actually know what people are going to do. It's something we don't like to accept-- the fact that we don't really have any clue what's going on inside other peoples' heads because, frankly, it's terrifying. Especially when they somehow end up outside of their right mind.
It sounds vaguely like the father of the baby leaving might have tipped the scale that final bit over the edge. Or maybe without him there to watch her she simply stopped trying to stay in her right mind. I'm not saying it's his fault, I'm not saying it's an excuse, I'm not even saying that that's right. I'm just saying it's a possibility. It's even possible she was on medication treating whatever illnesses she had but went off of it for the safety of the pregnancy and by the end of it was so out of her mind she wasn't about to put herself back on the medication again. There are a lot of factors as far as mental illnesses and depression go.
It doesn't say for what though, I don't think. Or for how long she actually stayed within the asylums. And if she was in there for something serious and none of the people there bothered to notify anyone about her state of mind, then is the asylum not also to blame for her actions? Not to mention her family members since they must have been aware on some level of her state of mind. And of course the father left her with the child and he must have had some knowledge...

The story reminds me slightly about a story not that very long ago about an Israeli mother who starved her 3yo son.
EDIT: Found it, the son was 3yo....

My wife told me about this last night and I nearly threw up.![]()
I think if anyone wants to hear about this or read about it there are enough outlets to flood our senses with it. I do believe this is something that should be left out of the forum, as most of us use the forum to escape the harsh real world and enjoy ourselves.
I agree. There is nothing worse than reading a book that ends up being realistic to the extreme. I read books and come here to enjoy life and to not actually live it for a few hours. Why bring RL here? 'Specialy this?
I have heard flaming shots are fun. Anyone want to try?
I agree that the forums are a place to just relax, and have some fun..
But, Kail, you have to realize that life isn't a little story book.. Things happen, and we can't always just shut it out & pretend nothing has happened. We have to accept the fact that stories like these, do happen everywhere.. and it's just really sad =/
